antique mahogany English sliding table
Special English wind-out table from around 1850 with a unique beam system for stability
This is an English wind-out dining table from around 1850 of very special quality. The beam system is quite unique because the beams provide support on both sides when extending, preventing the table from sagging. This is in contrast to Dutch, Belgian, or French sliding tables, which are often much cheaper but can wobble when someone bumps into them while drinking a glass of wine. You can reinforce them as much as you want, but it remains a challenge. That's why I prefer these tables. This table can extend to a maximum of 370 cm; if you take 60 cm per cover, that would allow for 6 on each side and 132 cm wide would accommodate 4 at the ends, totaling 16 people. The table has been raised by three cm under the wheel, which you can't see, but it makes sitting easier, as these tables are often too low. The whole thing slides in and out using a crank mechanism, which is much better than a pull-out system (which doesn't provide support from the wind rod and tends to sag earlier). The English refer to this as a sinking table, which you don't want and cannot be restored. As you can see, there are many pitfalls, and therefore a really good one is often double the price of a not-so-good one; often with everything, but I explain this to you so you don't think they just ask what they want. It is furniture art of the highest order, a top table.
