Original versus New

Of course, we won’t tell you to “go for new” if the original is of better quality, has a more beautiful appearance, and of course retains its value better — because no more are being made. Once the cabinet has left us and is with the customer, we rarely see it being offered for sale again.

Be careful when buying these cabinets: many sellers of new cabinets refer to them as “original.” In the sense of original, that is certainly true — it is an original cabinet, but not an authentic antique Globe Wernicke cabinet. It is a replica from India, Indonesia, or another Asian country. Many people are shocked when they want to order an additional cabinet and find out that the cabinet was brand new at the time of purchase. Here are some facts for you:

The difference between antique Globe-Wernicke bookcases and new (recently made) Globe-Wernicke-style bookcases mainly lies in value, quality, appearance, and collectibility. Below are the main advantages of antique versus new.

1. Historical value and authenticity

Antique cabinets from the Globe-Wernicke Company usually date from around 1890–1930 and belong to the original modular system developed by Otto Wernicke.

Advantages of antiques:

  • You own a piece of furniture history
  • Often handmade or produced using traditional techniques
  • Each piece has its own story and origin

New cabinets:

  • Have no historical context
  • Are often seen as reproductions or “style furniture”

2. Material and quality

The original cabinets were usually made from solid oak, mahogany, or walnut and were known for their high quality and craftsmanship.

Advantages of antiques:

  • Solid wood with often thick veneer
  • Construction that has proven to be durable for over 100 years
  • Beautiful patina (natural aging of the wood)

New cabinets:

  • Often thinner veneer or modern wood material
  • Sometimes MDF or industrially produced
  • Lacks natural patina

3. Value development (investment)

Original Globe-Wernicke cabinets are collectibles and are often sold at auctions and antique markets.

Advantages of antiques:

  • Can increase in value
  • Collectible value for enthusiasts
  • Original parts (labels, glass doors, etc.) increase the value

New cabinets:

  • Have virtually no collectible value
  • Behave financially like ordinary furniture

4. Modular system

The famous “Elastic Bookcase” was a stackable system where you could add or rearrange elements.

Advantages of antiques:

  • Many original parts still exist and can be combined
  • Possibility to gradually expand a library
  • Different depths and heights for different books

New cabinets:

  • Often less compatible with old parts
  • Less variation in original elements

5. Aesthetics and appearance

Antique Globe-Wernicke cabinets have a very recognizable classic library look with glass folding doors.

Advantages of antiques:

  • Authentic appearance of an old library or law office
  • Patina and small signs of use give character
  • Often more beautiful details in wood and glass

New cabinets:

  • Neater and more uniform
  • But sometimes also “too perfect” or less characterful
